Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

What makes Catholic's tick?

"No believer in Christ, No institution of the Church Can avoid this supreme duty; To proclaim Christ to all peoples." Pope John Paul II, Mission of the Redeemer, 3.

Ministry of the Faithful

We share in the Ministry of being the Good News to our neighbours, especially in our Parish Community, and then to the wider community. All the followers of Jesus Christ have an obligation of spreading the faith. It is our very nature as members of the Catholic Church to share the faith we have received, and show ourselves ready to give evidence of God’s Spirit working on our lives.

What is it?

It originates as a Vatican Document (1972), which provides a model for the welcoming and initiation of adults into the Catholic Church community according to the practice of the early Church.

In practice, the model results in a process of enquiry and gradual introduction to the story of Jesus and his followers. This process may lead the enquirer to conversion and faith, baptism and a commitment in faith within the Catholic Church.

What is it about?

R.C.I.A is about BEING CHURCH. It is about journey, welcoming, belonging and questioning. It is about a community celebrating and about commitment. It is about believing, proclaiming and living the GOOD NEWS.

When does it take place?

The process of conversion is a very individual one. The catechumenate period may take six months, one year, or two - as long as the catechumen wants or needs.

The R.C.I.A stresses the centrality of the Paschal mystery; it's focus is the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. We try to joyfully celebrate full initiation into our faith communities during the Easter Vigil or at other significant times during the year.

Who is involved?

Every person in the Bundaberg Catholic Christian Community has a part to play in this process, particularly those who volunteer to support the people seeking to learn about the Catholic Faith, whether they are baptised or not.

Why have the R.C.I.A?

  1. This Rite challenges us to ask: What does it mean to be Church?
  2. It is for the renewal of the whole Church.
  3. It encourages small groups to pray and grow in faith together.
  4. I helps build community.
  5. It helps bring about the Kingdom of God here and now.
  6. It can become the model of all instructions.
  7. It emphasises that sacraments are celebrations of God's presence.
  8. It is concerned with each person's faith story, which it celebrates.
